Mendip Leader becomes Chair of SW Employers and Provincial Council

Cllr Harvey Siggs, Leader of Mendip District Council and Somerset County Councillor has been elected as the Chair of South West Provincial Council and the South West Employers.

The Provincial Council is the joint negotiating and conciliation machinery for the South West. It comprises the employers’ side (South West Employers) and the trade union side and provides a forum for discussion, debate and negotiation on human resource issues.

Cllr Harvey Siggs (Conservative) is Leader of Mendip District Council and holds the Human Resources Portfolio at Somerset County Council. 

Cllr Siggs said:

“I am delighted to become Chair of South West Provincial Council and the South West Employers side at this very challenging time for employee relations issues, despite the pressures I look forward to continuing to work together with the trade unions in a proactive and positive way.”

The functions of the Provincial Council are:

• To exchange ideas with the view of increasing the understanding of the two sides (Employers and Trade Unions).
• To promote good industrial relations practice and training, including the development of good personnel practice.
• To undertake tasks as required by the National Joint Council.
• To establish and give legitimacy to dispute and conciliation machinery.
• To issue advice, as appropriate, to Local Authorities and Unions.
• To provide a forum for discussion on key strategic issues affecting Local Government industrial relations/training/personnel.

The South West Provincial Council meets twice yearly and the Employers’ side has a Management Committee, which meets three times a year to continue business.
