South West Leaders - We Must Protect the Interests of the South West Through This Time of Change

Release Date: Jun 22, 2010

Leaders of the South West Local Authorities noted the Chief Secretary of Treasury's announcement that Government funding is being withdrawn but say that there is still a job to do in representing the South West.

Council Leaders were aware that the money set aside by Government was to be withdrawn as work they were expecting to do for the Communities and Transport Departments has ceased under the coalition Government's programme. This already means redundancies for staff at the Taunton base.
Cllr Angus Campbell
Cllr Angus Campbell, Leader of Dorset County Council said:

"I understand the Government argument for withdrawing funding and it was expected.  The essential work of the Leaders' Board, which I Chair, continues for the time being to ensure the South West and its local authorities get the fairest and best deal in these difficult times."
