‘Total Place’ is a national initiative that looks at how a ‘whole area’ approach to public services can lead to better services at a lower cost. It is a challenging and ambitious programme which aims to bring together central government and local agencies to map the funding going into a place, with a view to improving the delivery of services in the future.

This new approach has the potential to offer significant efficiency savings by removing duplication where there is overlap in the activities of local agencies and identifying new ways of delivering services collaboratively at lower cost.

Total Place in the South West

In the South West there are many exemplar public services, but there are also some examples of duplication. Inspired by the national Total Place programme, £1.75 million of SW Improvement and Efficiency Partnership funding has been made available to support Total Place in the South West.

Total Place highlights links between services and helps to identify where public money can be spent more effectively. The process is building upon strong partnerships in the South West and providing an opportunity to take a radical look at how public services can be delivered differently to better meet the needs of the people who live here.
